In Darkness

I’m going through my traffic logs and I see some people hitting my site from some guy’s blog. I check it out, and what do I find?

A very familiar story. Very familiar. (Basically he’s got a copy of Crimes of Personality cut-and-pasted into his blog.)

I’m going through my archive, seeing what’s in there… and I found a couple of stories. No, not the fragments that I’m posting here on the blog, but entire, finished stories. I never posted them to the original library when I first created this site, and they’ve just been sitting around gathering dust since the day they were finished. They aren’t much, but I figure its gotta be better than listening to me talk about how much money I’m not making, so I’m putting them online.

The first one up is called The Devil. It’s about… well that’s pretty obvious. It dates from the same time period when I wrote “Anything” and “Bobs”, i.e. a VERY frickin’ long time ago. The inspiration for it is pretty much what you’d guess: extremely annoying conversations that I’ve either had or overheard other people having with Christians. Yeah… it’s one of THOSE stories.

Also, I wrote several stories during that time period, but I mentioned “Anything” and “Bobs” for a reason. …yeah, even back in the early, early days, I was busy trying to connect the dots. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Read all three stories.

This bit of story is part of a HUGE epic that I was going to write. That was back in the days when I thought I could write 12-novel epic storylines like the big fantasy writers do. I put a lot of time into worldbuilding for this project… and pieces of it have been/are being cannibalized for other projects even now. The world is *sort of* like a standard fantasy world with magic, etc., but I’ve twisted things rather heavily, and the whole atmosphere was incredibly dark and oppressive. This is a population that has pretty much had all hope and resistance (somewhat literally) beaten out of it by its rulers. There is no real magic to speak of… just fading remnants. Likewise there is no technology… just remnants. Into this dark, depressing mess, I (literally) dropped a character. This is the first entry of his journal…

The date on this file says 2001, but I remember writing this a LOT earlier than that. It was a idea for a science fiction serial. In the file, there was about a paragraph and a half of notes (which end in mid-sentence) and the chapter fragment that appears below. The story takes place in the future and has two main characters. One is an experienced space traveler, and the other is a time-displaced earthman from the 20th century. It should be fairly obvious which one is which. There is no mention of just how a man from 20th century earth ended up in the future… I couldn’t answer that question at the time, so I decided to start the story in the middle… thus the episode number.

The reason I abandoned it? It was TOO much of a ripoff of “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”. There was no way I could go forward with this without being laughed off the internet for my lack of originality.
