Damn, It Feels Good.

Writing, that is.

For those who haven’t been paying attention: I’ve started writing again. I’m remembering why I want to do this for a living in the first place. It’s a lot of work (anyone who says it isn’t, lies), but it also makes me the happiest I’ve been in quite a few months.

But enough about that. I’m not posting to say how great writing is, I’m posting to tell you just what the hell is going on.

WHAT am I writing, WHEN will I write [fill in favorite genre/character here] and when will you get a chance to see it? Have I given up on the making money stuff? If not, what’s the plan? Yeah… about all that…

For the next few months I’ll be focusing most (but not all) of my efforts on finishing up stories that I left hanging. Call it the Unfinished Business” stage. So yes, I will pick up “The Forgotten” very soon. I will also finish “In Deed” from the Book of Dark Places, but I’ll be doing it in text form… which means that I’ll be re-starting the story from the beginning. Two stories that I will NOT be finishing are “Captive Souls,” for reasons which are discussed elsewhere, and the “Generation Gap” story arc in The Crusade. I’m not sure exactly how The Crusade will fit in with my future projects, but I don’t want to leave any stories unfinished if I can help it. Unfortunately, the story arc that I was starting there was a major undertaking and picking it up now will delay too many other things that I want to get done sooner rather than later. So I WILL finish the story at some point… just not now. Whether there will be any future Crusade stories after that point is undecided. There are a few other unfinished stories sitting around on my hard drive that are in various stages of development. A few of those will be finished as well.

I can’t see myself charging anyone money to see the end of a story they thought they were getting for free, so you’ll be seeing all of the above stories in the Library when they’re done.

And after that?

After I’ve finished finishing(?) the old stuff, I’ll begin production on a horror anthology that I will distribute for profit. I’ve got enough ideas to fill several anthologies, and, in fact, I’ve got about four lined up. Not four stories… four anthologies, each with a different theme. I don’t know which collection I’m going to do first, but I’ll make that decision in the very near future. I also haven’t decided if it will be an ebook or a physical product, but I’m leaning toward physical.

Then what? Then I want to get into some some heavy, long-form serial fiction because that’s what I do best. Part of that can be done simultaneously with work on the anthology. But doing multiple simultaneous projects is not fun, so realize that there could be periods of time when I’ll be working hard on things that you just won’t see for a while… and probably won’t see for free.

What about the December novel I kept hinting about? Not gone. Not abandoned. I’ve lumped that in with the long-form serial fiction that I mentioned in the previous paragraph, but it will not be the FIRST such project… and probably not the second or third, either. I want to get the new ideas out first, and unfortunately I can’t write everything at once.

I also haven’t forgotten that there are few housekeeping items that need to take place around here… there are a couple of Dragons-Inn stories that need to go in the library, and I need to re-create the Reading List so newcomers can read everything in the proper order. All that type of stuff will be done by the end of the year… only a few weeks away.

I’m excited about the new start and the new stories. I’m excited about pulling in some new fans with some kickass new serial fiction. I’m excited about picking up the old stuff and finally landing the planes have been circling my brain in a holding pattern for months (or years). Looks like 2008 going to be a fun year. And a Dark one.

WOW. It’s been a long wait, but I’m sure it’ll be worth it.

It’s a real shame about the Captive Souls story. I’m now getting bounce-backs at the email I have for Rapina, so I guess this one is in limbo indefinitely. If I ever do hear back from her, you’ll be the first to know.

Sad to hear that Crusade too will remain on hiatus. The upside is that new work is coming and I’m sure it’ll be interesting.

Enjoy the holidays. Spend time with the wife. Write.

To steal from a recent marketing campaign for a certain game sequel…

    Hell, it’s about time.

It’s been a year. Will we see the conclusions of Forgotten and In Deed in 2009? COTA is interesting, along with the way it’s being delivered. Maybe that method would work with these two stories.

I wanted to finish CotA before I made any announcements, but yes. In Deed and Forgotten will be finished next. In Deed will be finished in the same format as CotA. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with Forgotten or whether I’ll finish it before or after I get back to In Deed.
