Flash Fiction: Love and Psychopaths

She met him at her mother’s funeral. So kind. So handsome. It was love at first sight. …but the stranger vanished before she could capture his heart (or his name). She had no choice but to go home that very night and slit her sister’s throat…. so that love could have another chance to bloom.

I cannot claim 100% ownership of this one. The words are, of course, my own work. However, the story was told to me by a friend years ago. He, in turn, heard it from another friend, who claimed it was part of some government test. Supposedly, if you could guess WHY the woman killed her sister, then you would either make an excellent criminal profiler, or you were a psychopath. I have not verified the existence of such a test or the presence of this question on it, so I’m going to call it an urban legend until proven otherwise. Meanwhile, I wrote it up as a piece of flash fiction.

Just for fun, take out the last part and ask your friends if they can guess why the girl killed her sister. If they can, and they’re not a criminal profiler… umm… run?

I can across this today on my Facebook. And it came with the answer which was this:

Answer: She was hoping that the guy would appear at the funeral again. If you answered this correctly, you think like a psychopath. This was a test by a famous American Psychologist used to test if one has the same mentality as a killer. Many arrested serial killers took part in the test and answered the question correctly. If you didn’t answer the question correctly, good for you. If you got the answer correct, please let me know so I can take you off of my e-mail list unless that will tick you off, then I’ll just be extra nice to you from now on. Be sure to share the test.

And I still agree with WeREwOLF. It is still messed up.

The woman’s motive for killing her sister is what made me make my earlier pronouncement. But that was *before* I realized it was a “psychopath test”… maybe I should just go check myself into a prison psyche ward right now.

Nah, fuck that, they don’t have beer.

Kragon, regarding the answer you found — and this is not directed at you but at whoever wrote that ‘answer’ — since when do all killers think alike? I can think of many motives for killing someone, and they’d all require different attitudes and behaviors. The psychopath described above would have an entirely different motive (and personality) than one motivated by, for example, simple greed. Or revenge. Or fear/desperation (ie. self-preservation), and so on. Just sayin’, killing is an *action*, not a personality trait; the motive makes the difference as to what kind of person you’re dealing with.
