May Bonus Story: The Text

It’s a new month, so that means it’s time for a new bonus story, for people who donate $5.00 to the site.

It’s back to horror this month. “The Text” has a Lovecraftian feel to it, and it may remind you of “In the Mouth of Madness” a little. That’s intentional.

You can also consider it a revamp of the storyline from the “Sign of the Usurper” fragment that I posted months ago. Rather than simply finish that story, I started over entirely and went a different (but related) direction with it.

Speaking of related, those who’ve read some of the OTHER bonus stories I’ve put out this year might… well… either you’ll see it or you won’t. ;)

Enjoy.

Oh… as usual, you have to use the “Donate $5.00” button and click the link that takes you back to DarkIcon.com once you’re finished over at Paypal. That should bring you to the page with the download link. If anything in the process fails to work properly, just let me know and I’ll make it right.

WOW. Very much like Lovecraft’s work. I liked this one a lot, but have to read it again because, just like HPL stories, I can’t completely comprehend just what’s going on.

Also, now I have to go back and re-read the other bonus stories to see if I can find what you’re hinting at being related.

As for the bonus stories to date, this is by far my favorite. I can’t put my finger on anything in particular, it’s just a good story.

No need to knock yourself out with all that re-reading. In a previous bonus story, a character had an unexpected passenger on a road trip. That passenger (or something of the same species) was seen briefly in the hallway in “The Text”. It wasn’t described in any detail in either story, and a section of text that would have made the connection more obvious didn’t make it past the final edit.

There are at least two more stories on my hard drive that are also related to this one; you just haven’t read them yet. Over time, there will be more connections as I develop my own mythology.

Remember every name that was mentioned in this story. You’ll see them again.

This story is no longer available.
Thanks to all those who helped me pay my electric bill this month (no joke!). I hope you enjoyed the story.

What about those other two related stories? Are they complete and waiting for the right time, or partially done?

“The Confession of Frank Mallory” was related (it was the July story).
Also, I’m not sure if it was the story I had in mind when I made that comment, but “Court of the Abominatrix” is definitely related. The very final scene of “The Text” and the last time you see Jones in CotA are both the same place. That same place is also see briefly in “The Confession…”

And now that you mention it, there is also another, much shorter story that I was saving to possibly expand into a larger work. It’s related as well, although the connection isn’t obvious. Perhaps I’ll post that one.
