CotA: Page Seven

Here’s Page Seven of the “Court of the Abominatrix” story.

The main difficulty in doing a story like this is keeping things moving at a fast enough pace so that people stay interested. This is the beginning of week three. It seems like more should have happened in the story by now. I keep wanting to speed things up, but when you view it in terms of actual word count, I’m only 3500 words in…. still in what would ordinarily be the introduction or prologue to one of my regular serial stories. You haven’t even met all the characters yet, let alone the titular creature (yes, there is an ‘abominatrix’).

Some of you may be wondering just what the hell the story is going to be about. “Some people are trapped somewhere and this thing is out to get them” is about all I can tell you at the moment. Except that maybe the word “get” in the previous sentence may mean something other than you think it does. ;)

Well, I’m reading every posting of it as I see them, and I’ll probably end up copying them all into one document so I can read them together at a later point in time. I agree that it’s moving slow, but that’s what I expect with only 500 words at a time. Hence my copying them into a single document so I can read maybe a month’s worth at a time and get the bigger picture.

That’s what I thought most of my existing readers would do: wait a week or two and read a larger section all at once. It’s probably what I would do. There are very few webcomics that I read daily; and I still prefer my print comics in large collections rather than individual issues. There’s no way I could read something like DC Comic’s “52” serial one week at a time; that would drive me insane. Even TV shows I prefer to watch on DVD or at least several saved episodes at once. Kinda flies in the face of the whole “shrinking attention span” we’re all supposed to be falling victim to these days.

Way I figure it, since CotA is the only fiction comin’ outa DI these days, I’m jumpin’ on every mini-chapter as it appears. Yeah, they’re short, but at least they’re close enough together that I don’t have to go back and refresh my memory before reading the latest one each time.

No spoilers here or nothin’, but I gotta say… that bit about Jones? Those two little words he spoke at the end? THAT’S fucked up, man.

    Just sayin’.

Yeah, WeREwOLf, that was pretty screwed up with Jones. But I like having to wait to hear the explanation about THAT.
